History

Origins of Kho Kho

Kho Kho is a traditional sport deeply rooted in India’s ancient history. Its strategy is often linked to the epic Mahabharata, particularly the 13th day of the war when Guru Dronacharya formed the Chakravyuha formation. The warrior Abhimanyu broke into this defensive ring and fought valiantly against multiple opponents. His circular movement, tactical awareness, and fighting style reflect the foundational concept of “ring play” in Kho Kho.

Beyond its historical association, the sport teaches essential values such as sportsmanship, teamwork, loyalty, discipline, confidence, agility, and strategic thinking. Kho Kho is more than a game—it is a tool for personal development and athletic growth.

Kho Kho gained early international exposure when it was showcased at the 1936 Berlin Olympics as a special demonstration. Its journey as an international sport officially began in 1996, during the 1st Asian Kho Kho Championship in Kolkata, followed by the strengthening of the sport at the 2nd Championship in 2000.

History of the Kho Kho Federation of England

The Kho Kho Federation of England was founded through the vision of Brij Haldania, who has been coaching Kho Kho in England for over 15 years. Brij previously played at the national level in India, representing Rajasthan, and was honoured as the Best Player of the State (1974–1977).

On 7th May 2013, Brij shared his dream of promoting Kho Kho internationally with fellow players Manoj Gopal and Rohit Haldania, his son. Their shared passion led to the formation of the initial plan to establish KKFE. A dedicated management committee soon followed, working voluntarily to promote the sport across England and create a standard rulebook aligned with the Asian Kho Kho Federation.

Brij continued attending major Kho Kho events in India, meeting officials and discussing international tournament possibilities, which led to him receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award in Kho Kho. In 2015, since there were no manufacturers of Kho Kho posts in England, Brij personally brought back a set of posts from India—making the first official Kho Kho match with posts in England possible in August 2015.
